Artist Statement

I create mixed media paintings that move between abstraction and figuration, exploring feminine identity, transformation, and the many layers that shape who we become.

My work begins without a fixed plan. Using acrylic paint, collage, texture, writing, fabric, and found imagery, I build, cover, cut, repaint, and reconstruct the surface. Faces emerge, disappear, and return through this process. Each layer leaves a trace of what came before, much like the experiences, memories, expectations, and stories that accumulate within us.

The women who appear in my work may be imagined, historical, mythological, or spiritual. I am drawn to figures whose identities carry multiple interpretations—women who have been celebrated, misunderstood, idealized, judged, worshipped, or transformed through the stories told about them. Rather than creating traditional portraits, I use these figures as starting points to explore emotion, resilience, power, vulnerability, and the complexity of feminine identity.

Transformation is at the center of both my subject matter and my process. A face may change many times before the painting is complete, reflecting my belief that identity itself is never entirely fixed.

My intention is to invite viewers to slow down, look beyond the surface, and discover their own meanings within the layers. In a world that often asks us to define ourselves as one thing, my work celebrates contradiction, complexity, change, and the freedom to continually become.

Artist Bio

Aimeth Aguilar is a Panamanian mixed media artist whose work explores transformation, emotion, and feminine identity through expressive abstract portraits. Working with acrylic paint, collage, texture, and layered mark-making, she creates paintings that evolve through an intuitive process of construction and reconstruction.

Aguilar has exhibited her work in Panama and internationally, and her recent series Faces of Becoming received an Honorable Mention in SeeMe Gallery's Fluid Ecology open call in New York. She is also a member of the Asociación Panameña de Artistas Plásticos (APAP).

In addition to her studio practice, Aguilar has taught art since 2014, encouraging creativity and self-expression while inspiring others to embrace the transformative power of the creative process.
